Laptops with VPN connections for remote access are the weakest link in the effort to protect sensitive data.
A study done by Computerworld indicates that 81% of all US organizations have already had the painful experience of losing a laptop with sensitive and valuable data. A similar study indicates that companies spend on average $50,000 on every lost laptop in an effort to recover the data or to recover from the consequences of losing the data.
This is on top of the huge amount of money spent on solutions and techniques to protect the data stored on laptops, USB's and other storage devices.
Why do companies spend all this money on protecting data?
Because people have a need to work outside the office. Many employers do not provide any solutions at all leaving people with no other options than to copy sensitive data onto USB sticks, phones and other storage devices. Employers that do provide solutions for people to work outside the office are, unfortunately, using a fundamentally wrong model by providing users with a laptop and a VPN for remote access and synchronization of data off the corporate LAN to the local storage. Consequently, sensitive and valuable data is removed from the secure LAN and left more or less available in the open.
The right solution to working outside the office is to enable users to connect when they need to work and leave data securely and protected on the corporate network.
G/On is a simple and very effective corporate solution that enables users to work on any PC by connecting securely and directly to their office PC. With the G/On USB, users can use any PC and connect to their office PC and work as if they are physically inside the office. G/On can very easily be configured to prevent data from leaving the office PC and hence the corporate network. In this case, the user is:
- Unable to copy/paste data between the local PC and the office PC
- Unable to print corporate data on printers connected locally to the local PC
- Unable to access storage (hard drives, USB devices) on the local PC for storage of corporate data.
Some users may have a need for moving data back and forth between their local PC and their office PC. In such case we recommend strongly that G/On is configured for file transfer with full logging of each transfer event for subsequent auditing and control.
