"I appreciate the fact that it’s so easy to set up users and control what they’re doing"

User Experience

G/On is wonderfully simple.

G/On is all about simplicity. G/On’s end-to-end approach makes it significantly simpler for the IT administration to implement and manage secure remote access and make it available to everyone in the organization.

G/On is also a very user friendly solution that will increase productivity for the users and help them focus on getting the job done. G/On makes it possible for the user to connect when needed ─ from wherever they happen to have access to a PC.

The user only needs to go through a few, simple steps:

  1. Launch the G/On client.
If you use the G/On USB, this just means plugging in the USB key.Desktop is launched by clicking the icon.
  2. Log in with your username and password.
At this point you are already protected by mutual client/server authentication.
  3. Choose which application you want to use.
Depending on how your G/On is configured a menu may appear in the taskbar showing your applications. Alternatively, G/On can be configured to launch a specific application automatically.
  4. Do your work.
Once you’re finished, close the application you were working on.
  5. Close the G/On connection.
Select Exit from the G/On menu and remove the G/On USB.
Optionally just remove the G/On USB thereby forcing a close of the application and of the G/On connection automatically.

This level of user-friendliness has several important benefits

It makes G/On easy to deploy because there is no learning curve, even for non-technical users.

The security is transparent to users – it’s always there – “behind the scene” no matter what they do.

Users cannot change any of the settings. This reduces Help Desk calls significantly.

What happens if software on the USB key gets deleted?

The G/On client includes a small program called G/Update. This is stored on the read-only partition of the G/On USB key or in the same folder with the G/On Desktop client. G/Update lets users connect to the G/On Server and have any missing files automatically pushed out to the G/On USB key.

What happens if the user looses the G/On USB key?

The user cannot work without the G/On USB key as it is part of the two-factor authentication. Subsequently, the user will have to contact the admin to have a new G/On USB key issued. Unlike the case when a user walks away from a logged in SSL-VPN connection, this allows the admin to un-adopt the G/On USB key. After un-adoption, the G/On USB key will no longer be able to connect to the G/On Server, but the G/On Server will continue to collect information about the remote PC, such as IP address, hostname, domain, MAC address, etc, from where the connection attempt was made. This information can be used to retrieve the G/On USB key, if necessary or report the loss/theft to the authorities.
